After defeat of the British King in the great Civil War, The Honorable Walter Stuart, MD, fled to France, with Frances Teresa, age about one year. She spent her childhood at the French Court of Queen Henrietta Maria. After Cromwell's death and the Restoration of the Monarchy, Charles II was restored to the throne and Frances Maria Stuart was restored to the English Court. There follows a history of the marriage of Charles II, his excesses at court and with various mistresses, including Frances. Events include the great plague, the fire in London, Samuel Peypes, intrigues against the King. Frances marries the Duye of Richmond, contemplates retiring to France, but is appointed by Charles a Lady of the Bed Chamber, and the Duke is appointed ambassador to Denmark where he is unhappy, alcoholic, and incompetent and dies. Frances receives a pension from the King, and returns to Court Society with all its intrigues. The Duchess finally withdraws from Society in ill health, loses her pension, but retains her wealth and estates in Scotland and dies at 54. A true story of court life in the 15th. Century.
