Asser's Life of King Alfred
Asser Bishop of Sherborne. Translated from the text of Stevenson's edition by Albert S. Cook. Boston Ginn 1906. Asser (born c.909), Bishop of Sherborne, joined Alfred's court as a scholar in about 885, and became the King's friend, teacher and biographer. His Life was completed in 893, some years before the kings death, and although a very biased portrait, it is unique in providing details of Alfred's early life and non-military activities. Brown boards with gilt title and gilt on spine, bumped and fraying at top and bottom of spine, corner edges bumped and fraying. Pages clean and tight. Media shipping $3.50.
