Asser (born c.909), Bishop of Sherborne, joined Alfred's court as a scholar in about 885, and became the King's friend, teacher and biographer. His Life was completed in 893, some years before the kings death, and although a very biased portrait, it is unique in providing details of Alfred's early life and non-military activities.
