The Monastery the story revolves around the abbey of Kennaquhair. The hero, Halbert Glendinning is the son of a soldier who has died fighting for the monastery. He and his brother Edward are brought up within the grounds of Kennaquhair along with the orphan Mary Avenel, who has been cheated out of her inheritance by her uncle Julian, a ruthless Border baron. Kenilworth a novel set during the time of Queen Elizabeth, based around the the murder of Amy Robsart, a story told in William Julius Mickle's 'Cumnor Hall', one of Scott's favourite ballads as a child. Surgeon's Daughter, etc This is the story of Menie Gray, daughter of Dr Gideon Gray, who falls in love with Richard Middlemas, an illegitimate child brought up in the surgeon's household. Richard has been educated to the medical profession, and the couple are betrothed with the blessings of Menie's father. Scorning his prospects as a country doctor, however, Richard leaves to seek his fortune in India. All 4 volumes are a navy blue color and appear to be leather. Printed on india paper, with tissue guarded frontispiece and ribbon marker. Additional black & white illustations in each volume. The spine is a bit sunned and rubbed on the top and bottoms. There is rubbing to the tips of the boards, plus some general scuffing. Hinges tight, and the contents are good.
