First edition. 8vo, 391pp; illustrated with half-tone portraits of authors, decorated trade binding by Margaret Armstrong in blue cloth with light blue and turquoise color stamping as well as gilt stamping forming front panel of roses, lilies, grapes, acorns, wild strawberries, persimmon, and bleeding heart surrounding heart-shaped cartouche with the title and author stamped in gilt and open book below, spine gilt-stamped with author and title and floral design. The binding by Margaret Armstrong uses different symbolic flowers to represent the books and authors: Dickens - English Holly; George Eliot - Ivy; Keats - Bleeding Heart; Izaak Walton - Strawberry etc. Spine & corners bumped, gilt rubbed off on spine, page edges light soil, text clean. Van Dyke has written a reference to twelve books and their authors, books which he feels will stand the test of time and hold a reader's interest on journeys, at bedtime, and on other occasions where a companion book is needed. Included are The Book of Psalms, and references to works of Samuel Johnson. Wordsworth, Izaak Walton, Emerson, and others. Media shipping $4.50.
